Описание картинок — эффективный метод в изучении английского языка

Автор статьи делится личным опытом описания картинок как эффективным методом развития лексических и коммуникативных навыков на уроках английского языка.

Не буду открывать Америку, если скажу, что идея описания фотографий, картинок при обучении английского языка не является новой, но этот метод для себя лично я открыла не так давно и теперь активно использую на своих уроках. С чего всё началось?

Решили мы с десятиклассниками поучаствовать в республиканском конкурсе, где необходимо было записать видео с описанием изображения. Начали тщательно готовиться: в Интернете я скачала примерный план, обсудили детали текста на русском языке, повторили вводные слова и фразы для того, чтобы ребята могли легко соединить предложения и их части между собой, выразить своё мнение и придать тексту выразительность и эмоциональную окраску.

План описания картинки использовали следующий:

 

1. Introduction

This picture is on the subject / topic of........ (entertainment; sport; hobbies; environment; shopping etc.).

It's a black-and-white/coloured picture.

In this picture the action is taking place in… (the house; the living room; the gym; the swimming pool; the theme park etc.).

2. What and Where

In the foreground/background there is…........ (some pieces of furniture; sports equipment; some people doing shopping etc.).

In the foreground/background you can see…(some children; a family; a shop assistant etc.).

In the middle/centre there is/are…

At the top/At the bottom there is/are…

On the left/right there is/are…

3. Who is doing what? Talk about what people are doing in the picturе

They are ........(having dinner; watching a film; having a break; doing their homework etc.)

4. What the people look like.

(Age / height / build / hair / eyes / nose / mouth / special features / general impression)

5. How the people are feeling.

(Bored / annoyed / upset / sad / miserable / lonely / unhappy / depressed / confused / furious / angry / relaxed / concentrated / worried / happy / tired / interested / puzzled / confident / interested / excited / calm / pleased / thrilled / relieved / amazed)

6. Talk about the atmosphere.

The atmosphere in the picture is ........(friendly, peaceful, relaxing, tense, busy, warm, cosy, happy etc.).

7. Describe the season / weather.

I think / suppose / guess it's summer /spring / winter / autumn

8. Talk about your personal attitude to the picture. How the picture makes you feel.

Personally I, / As for me, / Frankly speaking, I like this picture as it is bright and colourful, full of positive emotions, etc.). Generally speaking, this picture doesn't appeal to me because ........ (this activity is not my cup of tea / I hate doing........).

На уроке внеурочной деятельности мои ребята принялись за работу, но тут столкнулись с трудностями: использовали очень примитивную лексику, забыли за существование оборота there is/are, допускали ошибки в использовании предлогов, некоторых грамматических структур и т.д.

В наших школьных учебниках по английскому языку этому виду работы не приделается должное внимание, да и я его не рассматривала. А зря! Временные рамки конкурса ограничивали наше время, мне пришлось усиленно помогать учащимся, повторять и заполнять все пробелы в знаниях. Тексты по описанию фотографии были составлены, произношение отработано, видео записано и отправлено на вердикт жюри. Конечно же, этот процесс был время- и энергозатратным, но удовлетворение и дополнительная порция мотивации у ребят возникла после того, как они получили призовые места. Кроме того, отработанные фразы учащиеся активно использовали в своих устных ответах при обсуждении той или иной ситуации, написании эссе и т.д. и отмечали прогресс в пополнении своего активного запаса.

С тех пор я активно внедряю этот метод на своих уроках, прежде всего, как средство, стимулирующее учащихся бегло и грамотно говорить на английском языке, тренировать произношение и написание слов. Описывая фотографии, ребята подключают свое воображение при построении предположений, используют истории из своей жизни, вспоминают личные примеры, детально рассматривают предметы, изображенные на картинке, время суток, погоду и т.д. Так же следует отметить, что при таком виде работы учащиеся не боятся сделать ошибку. Для поддержки обратной связи я использую модель «бутерброд», где чередую плюсы и минусы: первое, необходимо похвалить, подчеркнуть всё положительное в ответе, второе, предоставить критику, указать на ошибки, третье, обсудить план действий, поддержка, похвала.

Чтоб описание картинки не сводилось к зубрёжке, использую различные приемы:

“Thought Clouds”. Учащиеся получают картинки и делают подписи в «облачках» - мысли героев о том, что они по мнению учащихся думают в настоящий момент.

“Make up questions”. Работа в группах. Подбираю фотографии человека/людей. Одна группа составляет вопросы к картинке, другая – отвечает, например: How old do you think this woman is? What sort of background do you think she comes from? What are their children like? What does his friend do for living? What is the weather like?

“Let's predict” (тренируем вводные фразы: probably, maybe, in my opinion, I suppose). Показываю фрагмент картинки, учащиеся угадывают, что изображено на другой ее части.

Активная работа в этом направлении помогает закрепить лексический и грамматический материал в долговременной памяти. Большинство ребят незатруднительно подбирают идеи для описания любых изображений, жизненных ситуаций.

С помощью данного метода можно проводить опрос по прочитанному тексту (иллюстрацию часто генерирую с помощью нейросети по ключевым словам), проверить домашнее задание.

Работа с картинками и фотографиями способствуют созданию положительной мотивации на уроке, формированию коммуникативной компетенции и воображения.

 

Пример описания картинки

First of all, the picture deserves careful consideration. There are many interesting elements in it. I think the action is taking place in a country house. Most likely, the grandparents live in it.

The first thing that catches the eye is a unique atmosphere of family warmth and comfort. I'm sure it is no coincidence that the photo depicts a big loving family. You know, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has declared 2024 the "Year of the Family".

In the foreground, we can see a happy family. There are 6 family members: a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, a grandfather and a grandmother. They are smiling and having rest.

In the center of the photo is a table with a festive dinner. There are many different dishes there. You can see baked meat, salads and, everyone's favourite, grandma's pies. Each member of the family has his own drink and, properly arranged, cutlery.

The clothes of our characters are solemn. I suppose the family is celebrating some joyful event, perhaps grandma’s birthday. She is wearing a coral shirt - the brightest spot of the picture and sitting at the head of the table, youthful and pleasant. Grandpa is slicing probably his special food – baked meat. A dark-haired handsome man is sitting next to him. He’s looking at what his father-in-law doing with a smile.

The beautiful woman is sitting between her husband and son, has fine delicate features. She’s looking at her son enthusiastically and is about ready to laugh. She’s wearing a light blue dress or blouse, we can’t say exactly. Her hair is tired in a bun.

The youngest generation is two little kids. The little girl has beautiful long hair with a cute pink bow, which goes with her pink dress perfectly. In her hands, we can notice a toy bear, probably it is her favourite toy and she doesn't part with it. She’s looking at her brother with interest.

The boy is wearing in a checked shirt. He looks a lot like his father.

In the background we can see two large windows that offer a beautiful view of nature. There is a white vase with posh roses and a family photo on the windowsill.

On the left of the picture there is a dog, who is trying to attract family’s attention by chewing the tablecloth.

Without any exaggeration (без всякого преувеличения), the main feature of this family is the mutual respect and love of parents and children. Smiles and positive emotions make a family hearth очаг. There is always a good mood in it, without a doubt.

That's all for present. Sum it up I’d like to admit that family is an essential part of the society and it plays the most important role in everybody’s life. It means that the most important people in our life are our family members.

I believe that everyone wants to have a happy family and good relations with all its members. In my opinion, a happy family should have mutual interests, hopes and dreams to share. Other important issues are love, trust and respect. When people love each other, they can overcome all the obstacles!

I have enjoyed a lot describing this wonderful picture. It makes me feel really good because I have such kind of family.
