Burns Night is annually celebrated in

Scotland on or around January 25. It commemorates the life of the bard (poet) Robert Burns, who was born on January 25, 1759. The day also celebrates Burns’ contribution to Scottish culture. Many people and organizations hold a Burns supper on or around Burns Night. These may be informal or formal. Formal events include toasts and readings of pieces written by Robert Burns.

Father's Day comes on the third Sunday in June. Americans honour their fathers. Many people send their fathers cards or gifts.

Guy Fawkes was part of gunpowder plot in 1605. He wanted to blow up King James I and his government. This was because of religion.

England was a Protestant country and the plotters were Catholic. They wanted England to be Catholic again, which they thought they could do if they killed King James I and his ministers.

So, Guy Fawkes and his group put 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars underneath the Houses of Parliament in London, ready to set off a massive explosion.

However, one member of Fawkes’ group sent a letter to his friend who worked in Parliament, warning him to stay away on 5 November.

The King’s supporters got hold of the letter and the plot was rumbled!

Guards broke into the cellars where the gunpowder plotters were waiting. They were arrested and executed.

Thanksgiving Day is a day for people in the US to give thanks for what they have. Families and friends get together for a meal, which traditionally includes a roast turkey, stuffing, potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, and pumpkin pie. In some cities and towns, there are parades during the Thanksgiving weekend.

1 Pilgrim: Nice to meet you, dear friends. We’d like to tell you about the history of Thanksgiving Day.

1 Indian: Thanksgiving Day is one of the most favourite holidays in the United States.

1 Pilgrim: Every fourth Thursday of November American people celebrate this holiday. They usually stay at home and have a big family dinner.

1 Indian: This day has a very important meaning in the history of America. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by pilgrims in autumn of 1621.

1 Pilgrim: But who were the pilgrims and why did they cоme to America?

1 Indian: We don’t want to live in England any more. We are looking for religious freedom. Let’s go to America.

1. Pilgrim: They sailed on “Mayflower” ship from Plymouth, England, in September 1620.

Their voyage was very difficult. At first, the passengers enjoyed good weather at sea.

1 Indian: But soon, strong wind and fierce storm developed. The ship began to shake and leek. Finally, one of the main beams broke. Some of the passengers and sailors were afraid the ship couldn’t cross the ocean. They wanted to return to England. But others felt confident.

1 Pilgrim: So everyone put his trust in God, and they all decided to continue. After a long struggle with the sea, the “Mayflower” came to land. In December 1620 they landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now the state of Massachusetts (the USA).

2Indian: Welcome to our land! Who are you? Where are you from?

2Pilgrim: We are Pilgrims. We are from England. And who are you?

3 Indian: We are Indians. We have been living here for a long time. You may stay here and live on our land.

All Pilgrims: Thank you very much

3 Pilgrim: We have nothing to eat. Many people have died and many are sick. What shall we do?

4 Indian: We’ll teach you how to plant corn, build houses, hunt and fish. Our land is very rich.

4Pilgrim: Thanks!

5 Pilgrim: We’ll pray for you!

6 Pilgrim: We’ll be good pupils.

1 Pilgrim: Indians taught the Pilgrims to plant corn, to build houses, to hunt, to fish. In other words - how to survive in America.

1 Indian: In the autumn 1621 the pilgrims had a wonderful harvest.

1 Pilgrim: They were very thankful to Native Indians and decided to have a Thanksgiving feast.

7Pilgrim: Be thankful for home

Be thankful for food

Be thankful for birds that fly

8 Pilgrim: Be thankful for sleep

Be thankful for flowers

Be thankful for clouds in the sky.

9 Pilgrim: Be thankful for friends

Be thankful for rain

And the rainbows that follow close by.

1 Pilgrim: The main dish on the Thanksgiving day is turkey and most popular dessert is a pumpkin pie.

1 Indian: We want you to try this pie!
